K-Pop Stars Turn Diplomatic Envoys With Concerts in North Korea

Gambar
They’ve won over buttoned-up investors at a banking conference with their jingles about teenage love, but the K-Pop girl band Red Velvet is about to face what may be its toughest audience yet: North Korea. The chart-topping starlets will perform Sunday with 10 other South Korean music groups at the first of two concerts this week in Pyongyang. It’s the latest overture in Seoul’s decades-long cultural diplomacy push, aimed at softening ties with its closed off and nuclear-armed neighbor. Taking place four weeks before an historic meeting between the two countries’ leaders, the music tour could provide a test of whether North Korea’s attitude to the rest of the world is truly thawing. As they belt out their dance tunes “Red Flavor” and “Bad Boy” to about 1,500 members of the North Korean elite at the East Pyongyang Grand Theater tonight, Red Velvet will be hoping for a less frosty reception than those that have gone before them. “The whole purpose of cultural exchange is to open the g...

K-Pop diplomacy: South Korean artists fly to North for rare concerts

The concerts in Pyongyang on Sunday and Tuesday come ahead of a historic summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in at a border village on April 27. The meeting, which will precede a planned summit between Kim and President Trump in May, could prove to be significant in the global diplomatic push to resolve the standoff over the North's nuclear weapons and missile program. K-Pop time: South Koreans fly to North for rare concerts

From aging crooners to bubbly K-Pop starlets, some of South Korea's biggest pop stars flew to North Korea on Saturday for rare performances that highlight the sudden thaw in inter-Korean ties after years of tensions over the North's nuclear ambitions. The meeting, which will precede a planned summit between Kim and President Donald Trump in May, could prove to be significant in the global diplomatic push to resolve the standoff over the North's nuclear weapons and missiles program. The 120-member group that flew to Pyongyang also included government officials, reporters and a taekwondo demonstration team that will perform in Pyongyang on Sunday and Monday. Can K-pop bring the two Koreas closer together?

Gambar
K-POP is a serious business, especially when put to the service of peace, mutual understanding and denuclearisation. So the three-day visit beginning on April 1st that will bring some of South Korea’s biggest stars to Pyongyang to play a joint concert with North Korean colleagues needed careful preparation. Before southern officials went to check out the venues, an advance party of South Korean performers discussed line-up, staging and the delicate question of costumes with their northern counterparts. Both sides were keen to avoid the hiccups at similar previous events. In 2003, the last time a southern songster delegation went north, the bare skin they displayed left northern officials nonplussed. This time the task is to “make sure nothing is awkward”, said Yoon Sang, a musician and producer who is leading the southern jamboree.  Get our daily newsletter Upgrade your inbox and get our Daily Dispatch and Editor's Picks. On a recent Tuesday afternoon in Seoul, South Korea, a chorus of flashbulbs began to go off in a packed auditorium in the Zaha Hadid –designed Dongdaemun Design Plaza, where the men's wear brand Caruso was slated to present its fall 2018 collection as part of Seoul Fashion Week . The target of the cluster of photographers gathering at the front row: Shim “Max” Changmin and Jung “U-Know” Yunho, the musician duo who comprise the group TVXQ—which, after it was conjured into being 15 years ago by S.M. Entertainment, the label behind Girls’ Generation , Shinee , f(x), and Red Velvet , was quickly swept into the upper reaches of K-pop stardom. (TVXQ, which stands for Tong Vfang Xien Qi, roughly translates to “rising gods of the east”; in Japan, where they are nearly as famous as they are at home, they record as Tohoshinki.) On the evening of the Caruso show, three years had passed since TVXQ’s previous studio album, 2015’s Rise As God, was released. Just a week after the show, they wer...

Inside the Sadness Plaguing K-Pop

Gambar
Nothing cheers you up, lifts you up, brings you life quite like pop music. Even when it's Harry Styles or  Adele or Sam Smith or BTS  achingly belting their despair into that cold, lonely night...songs that make you feel all the feelings are still songs that are taking you to new heights. There's nothing quite like a tune that hurts so good. As we wallow, so do we celebrate. In South Korea, the genre is known as K-Pop—a catchy moniker established in the 1990s that's starting to catch fire around the globe—and all the hallmarks of the superstars of the Western world are present and accounted for: Charismatic boy bands, polished pop princesses, infectious chart-topping singles, carefully crafted images and tender-aged men and women who've inspired a level of fanaticism reserved for...well, almost no one besides pop stars these days.  Music is the universal language, after all. But for the second time in four months, the K-pop world is in mourning,...
