K-pop stars BTS to model for Coca-Cola at FIFA World Cup

Coca-Cola is partnering up with the Korean pop band BTS for an ad campaign slated to run during the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. Korean media are reporting the partnership, which will occur during the tournament in June. A photo circulating online shows the seven members of the Bangtan Boys dressed in Coke-branded clothing and posing with Coke bottles in their hands. The boy band is currently the biggest K-pop band in the world, and is on the verge of launching a world tour this summer. The band is also slated to perform at the Billboard Music Awards in May. It’s unclear whether BTS will perform for Coca Cola, as the company has already enlisted singer Jason Derulo to perform its World Cup anthem, “ Colors .” Let's block ads! K-pop star DO from EXO shows why he's more than just a singer in one of South Korea's most popular boy bands

Custodio: A question of trust

Gambar
SO I was surfing the net last Friday and saw social media walls with posts from that momentous meeting of the leaders of North and South Korea. I was so touched by what I saw, I felt like crying. Wow! It was indeed a long time coming! I actually did not expect this meeting would ever happen in my lifetime, especially with the controversies concerning North Korea. As I watched them in awe, I was so moved by witnessing Kim Jung Un step into South Korean soil for the very first time! I was totally floored when after having their photographs taken, he actually gestured President Moon Jae In to take a step back and stand on North Korean soil too! I sincerely thought that the moment was both precious and poignant! What a historic event! I was genuinely happy for the whole of Korea and hopeful that the world will not end up fighting each other for global supremacy. Talk about good vibes, right? It amazes me when news like this can affect me. That good feeling washed o...

Why has South Korea suddenly paused the K-Pop blaring across the DMZ?

Gambar
As the leader of North Korean and South Korean await an historic sit down, an aural peace has descended on the peninsula as South Korea halts their decades-long tirade of physiological warfare in the form of very, very loud K-Pop. For decades now, the level of political tension in the Korean war has been signified by the number of decibels ringing out from across the border. Described by the New York Times as the “Hello Kitty offensive” sound has long been used as a form of propaganda and political warfare in that part of the world. On an island off the coast of China, the Taiwanese once erected the world’s loudest outdoor speakers to inform their enemies that “Taiwan is a treasure island,” and “We will come to save you from hell.’ The recent musical battle on the Korean peninsula erupted again in 2016 when the point of contention between the two countries heightened thanks to North Korea setting off nuclear blasts. Before then the two countries had enjoyed an 11-year silence. A...

Gay K-pop singer from OC pushes envelope in South Korea

Gambar
Breaking into the hyper-competitive K-pop music industry is notoriously brutal. But what if you’re a foreigner — and gay? Meet Marshall Bang, better known to audiences as MRSHLL. He’s a Korean-American singer from Orange County who's trying to conquer South Korea’s music scene with his rich, chocolatey voice, and at the same time upend its culturally conservative mores.  Bang is debuting his solo EP next month on the FeelGhood Music label, after singing his way into the Korean consciousness last year on the wildly popular television talent contest called "Show Me the Money," a kind of hip-hop "The Voice." Millions of viewers may not have known it, but they were watching one of the country’s few openly gay entertainers. Being gay may not seem like it would be a big deal in the glitzy land of K-pop, which is awash in gender bending and populated by feminine-looking young men who are some of the industry's brightest stars. "They’re prettier," Bang sai...

A concert series that began in Seoul today will feature some of Korea's most prominent artists as they hope to raise awareness regarding suicide prevention, the latest instance of South Korean entertainers partaking in public discourse surrounding psychological disorders and treatment. He will be joined throughout April 23-May 7 by many prominent South Korean stars, including Lee Seung Chul , Girls’ Generation’s Sooyoung, Kangta, singer-songwriter Yoon Jong Shin, and several other artists and actors. All proceeds raised will be donated to youth suicide prevention organizations, making it one of the largest-scale events to recently feature K-pop stars raising funds to aid people struggling with their mental health. The suicide prevention concert ser...

(Photo: Ed Jones, AFP/Getty Images file) South Korea stopped blasting the country's distinctive "K-pop" music and anti-communist rhetoric across the North Korean border Monday, a move aimed at "reducing military tensions between the South and North and creating a mood for peaceful talks" later this week. "The Ministry of National Defense halted the loudspeaker broadcasts against North Korea in the vicinity of the military demarcation line," the ministry said in a statement. A summit between the divided nations is scheduled for Friday at the border village of Panmunjom. South Korea has been pumping propaganda and pop music across the border for more than two years.
