K-pop group Blackpink are not only absurdly popular, they’re now breaking all sorts of records. The all-female quartet broke a record for K-pop girl groups set by the Wonder Girls almost a decade ago when the latter’s single Nobody made its debut and peaked at No 76 in 2009 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Japanese AV girls in K-pop band Honey Popcorn hold fan meeting Blackpink’s latest single, Ddu-Du Ddu-Du , did even better by coming in at No 55 – and the news coincided with the release of their first mini-album titled Square Up . The group – which comprises Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa – are also breaking records on YouTube, with that track becoming the fastest K-pop girl group music video to surpass 20 million views. SINGAPORE - Get ready for a lot more K-pop, as 21 South Korean pop acts including Wanna One, Taeyeon, Apink, and BTOB will be in town to perform over a three-day festival in September. To be held from September 7 to 9 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, the multi-day event known as the HallyuPopFest will see over 100 top Korean idols take to the stage to sing and dance. Much attention will be on the performance by the hugely successful boyband Wanna One, as this may be the last time they will be performing in Singapore before they are expected to disband at the end of the year. Beyond the performances, fans can snag opportunities to meet their idols as well as attend other fan events involving hi-fives and group photos. This song came over the speakers, and you bet I Shazam-ed that shit ASAP. I’m ashamed to admit that my knowledge of recent idol groups—and specifically, boy groups—are severely lacking. The pinnacle of my K-Pop fandom was in the late 2000s and early 2010s, when groups like Girls’ Generation, KARA, and SHINee were considered rising stars and legacy groups like Brown Eyed Girls and Jewelry (remember them?) were the old guard. BTS were named biggest selling album for K-Pop in Japan (Picture: Chelsea Lauren/REX/Shutterstock) K-pop boy band BTS emerged as the top Korean artist in album sales in Japan for the first half of 2018. Oricon chart, Japan’s version of the Billboard chart, released the single and album sales rankings for the period 25 December 2017 to 18 June 2018. In the list, Face Yourself, BTS’ Japanese album released on 4 April, placed fourth place overall with 320,094 copies sold to date. Japanese artists AKB48, Namie Amuro and Kanjani Eight took the first three places. The album was also certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) for selling more than 250,000 copies. In addition, BTS’ latest album, Love Yourself: Tear, ranked 11th with 173,743 units in sales.
